Traditions That Still Fit: Considering the Holiday Season

ree

“See, I am doing a new thing.” – Isaiah 43:19

The holidays can stir up a storm of memories—old traditions, empty chairs, and moments that once felt full but now feel tender. When life changes, our traditions can too.

Letting go of certain things doesn’t mean you’re letting go of love; it means you’re creating space for peace and presence in this new season.

Think about the following questions to help prepare you for the holiday season.

1. Traditions I’m letting go of this year: Think about the traditions that feel too heavy, too painful, or simply no longer fit who you are right now. Give yourself permission to release them.

2. New or simplified traditions I want to try: What small comforts or new rhythms might bring you peace? Maybe it’s doing a holiday lights walk with a friend, how about trying a new holiday coffee drink in a real mug at a coffee shop to catch up, reading a Christmas romance in front of the fire, or buying a different kind of Christmas tree and decorating it differently.

3. A person I can invite to join me: Who could share a meal, a prayer, a new traditions, or a quiet moment with you this season?

Reflection thought: It’s okay to release what no longer fits. No one is asking you to recreate your old holidays. No one is asking you to abandon your holidays. Just think about what will serve you, because no one else may your needs.
